Ettrick

Founded on gold and well known as a premium apple growing district, Ettrick is also the perfect base for seeking the solace and thrills of a Central Otago high country experience.

Formerly known as Bengerburn, Ettrick lies at the southern end of the beautiful Teviot Valley, 10 minutes south of Roxburgh and a short distance from the mighty Clutha River.
Founded by Scottish settlers during the Central Otago gold rush in the 1860s this small township is named after Ettrick Valley in Scotland. Gold recovery began a steady decline from 1902, but some public mining companies did manage to have considerable success during 1905. However, by 1908 one company after another had gone into liquidation.

Ettrick was one of the first places in New Zealand where settlers grew apples. So ideal is the Central Otago climate for fruit growing, not only is Ettrick home to a registered fruit pack house and inspection depot, but there is now a certified organic fruit pack house. Dry weather conditions in spring, summer and autumn mean there are less pest problems for growers dedicated to chemical free fruit production.

Quaint tearooms provide a range of convenience and tasty food and a town hall, tavern and post centre are also in service. A selection of Central Otago accommodation is open all year round and often caters to the growing number of regular holiday makers, seasonal orchard workers, shearing crews and backpackers.

A turnoff into the Old Man Range to the west, at the south end of Ettrick, is one way to obtain panoramic views of the Teviot Valley from Moa Flat.
