Heritage in Central Otago

Central Otago has a rich heritage that provides a strong sense of identity and belonging. The region's heritage tells the stories of how the land was formed as well as the people and creatures that passed through and/or stayed in the area. well as who we are as a district.

The district is blessed with a wealth of museums, heritage buildings, and heritage organisations - many of these are listed within the Community Directory. Also listed is a fabulous array of heritage-related events.

Central Otago Heritage Strategy

"Central Otago's heritage is a living habitat that is to be respected, valued, protected, preserved, celebrated, promoted and community-owned for present and future generations." A district-wide strategy, developed by the Central Otago Heritage Trust, provides the framework for protecting and celebrating our heritage Taonga.

Central Otago Heritage Strategy 2018 and Heritage Plan 2018 were developed hrough extensive consultation with heritage sector groups, and used the community-generated Towards Better Heritage Outcomes for Central Otago 2012 report as a base document. The Central Otago Heritage Strategy and Heritage Plan (Version Two) are working documents that will be revised and updated by the heritage sector, as required.

If you are visiting the Cromwell Heritage Precinct, look out for a newly-installed plaque on the Grain and Seed Store. This plaque was installed last year in recognition of internationally reknowned war surgeon Douglas Waddell Jolly. Here is an article from the Otago Daily Times to provide a bit more detail.
