Kyeburn

Follow the meandering Kyeburn River beneath rutted cliffs to peaceful reminders of Kyeburn’s golden hey days. Along the northeast end of the Maniototo Plains, 10 minutes east of Ranfurly is the Upper Kyeburn and Lower Kyeburn.

The Upper Kyeburn goldfields boasted hotels, stores, a butcher, a baker and a school. The only reminder is a quaint cemetery and scars of sluicing and dredging along the river banks and terraces. A large gold dredge operated in the Kyeburn River and miners were well served by the nearby Danseys Pass Hotel.

A four wheel drive adventure to the Mt Buster White Sands in the Mount Ida Range will reveal glistening white, carved diggings, above the blue Maniototo sky.

The Lower Kyeburn area has virtually disappeared, but the bridge over the Kyeburn River on State Highway 85 (known as The Pigroot) is a short distance away from the site of old Maiseys Hotel, which was lost to fire.

Kyeburn was also a stopping point for Cobb & Co coaches on their journey to Naseby and the Otago interior. The school, now closed, still stands on the corner of SH85 and the Kyeburn-Danseys Road. There are also tennis courts, a hall and a community access library.
