Business Continuity and Emergency Management

Business continuity is about ensuring that your business whether large or small is able to recover and continue functioning in the event of a disaster or extended period of disruption.

Disruption doesn’t have to be a major event such as a natural disaster for your business to be impacted; it may be small such as a disruption to your supplier, issues with transportation, computer system failure, high staff turnover/illness, poor harvests or pests and diseases.

Key points from a recent forum to help Central Otago businesses plan their responses were:

Business continuity is not just planning for a major disaster it is about planning for any adverse event that may affect your business (e.g. supplier disruption, high staff turnover)
Business continuity planning is not just about having a nice printed document which is likely to be read once and then shelved it is about the process of planning for emergency and discussing with staff and stakeholders (on a regular basis) about how events will be managed.
Communication is key; communication with staff as well as communication with stakeholders such as suppliers and customers.
Recovery from an emergency depends on the community and the plans, procedures and networks that people and businesses have in place before an emergency strikes.
If someone said it won’t happen plan for it! …it happens!
Take time to really think through the different scenarios that may affect your business and exercise regularly.
There are small things that a business can do now that don’t cost a lot that can help you save money later and help you recover faster. (e.g. secure key equipment and furniture, back up important files on a portable hard drive etc.)
Consider Employer and Employee obligations and ensure employment contracts are written to take into account adverse events.
Ensure Insurance is up to date and policies are correct.
