Lauderburn House was built in the mid 1920’s as a doctor’s house and infirmary. Over the years until the early 1960’s various doctors and their families have lived at the house. The house was later transformed into a Bed and Breakfast for guests, this was when it got its name, Lauderburn House, (Lauder after the town and Burn meaning small stream). It is however more commonly referred to by the locals as ‘The Doctor’s House’.
The house is set on six acres in the town of Lauder. It is the closest accommodation to the spectacular Poolburn Gorge viaducts and tunnels. The two guest rooms are the Karearea and the Kahu rooms. We also have a small cottage sleep out, 'Matuku Moana', a lovely self-contained room that has the use of our outdoor bathroom with hot shower and composting toilet. It is also able to be booked in conjunction with our other guest rooms. Their bathroom facilities could then be shared. We have enjoyed refurbishing the guest rooms and will continue to renovate and restore this beautiful house and property over the years to come. Establishing the pond area has been a priority. We have planted 70 Flax bushes, native Toi Toi, Cabbage trees, Pittosporums and native grasses. Both Mallard and Teal ducklings have made our pond their home along with our Welsh Harlequins. Our resident White Faced Heron can be seen fishing there regularly.
