Only 1 km from the Alexandra bridge and hidden from the road, Legacy Vineyard flourishes on a small plot of land steeped in the history of Central Otago gold mining and horticulture.
The 140 year old stables and tranquil grounds provide quaint surrounds for tasting and cellar door sales.
Family owned and managed with grapes planted in 1991 we produce outstanding Pinot Noir and Rose wines. Set only 200m from the Clutha River and Millennium bike trail the vineyard sits high above the surrounding dredge tailings, long since covered with trees and thyme.
The early Europeans who had swarmed the banks to wash the alluvial gold from the river’s gravels were joined by Chinese miners whose cradles and sluices gouged their way further into the terraces. The market garden and early vines that thrived in the Central Otago climate from the 1870’s were complimented by a flourishing large stone fruit orchard on the highest terrace as the dredges appeared in the 1890’s.
Golden Beach, as the land was known then, was consumed by dredges for the short term profits and the disputed two hectares of Legacy Vineyard was all that survived a century ago. The untouched bed of gold under the vines, the terroir, the past orchards, the old stone buildings or maybe the family ties through 150 years of gold mining and orcharding.
Is it this ‘legacy’ that is reflected in our beautiful wine? Come and discover for yourself. You are most welcome to call in to taste and buy our wine at anytime during daylight hours.
