The Brain Injury Association of Otago (BIA) has a free liaison service which covers the whole Otago region including Wanaka, Cromwell, Alexandra and Roxburgh. The BIA is a non-profit organisation funded by grants, donations and a contract with the Ministry of Health.
The Liaison Service is available to those that received a brain injury through a medical event e.g. tumour, meningitis, aneurysm, stroke, neurotoxic injury to name a few or, a traumatic brain injury from a fall, assault, motor vehicle accident or concussion.
The Service offers • Information around brain injury and its effects • Individual client support –attending appointments, assessments etc • Education to individuals and the wider community • Advocacy in dealing with various agencies e.g. Work & Income, ACC, Probation, Rehabilitation Therapists etc • Assist Clients in connecting with various community agencies • Facilitated support groups to assist in understanding the injury
There are two support groups in the Central district one in Alexandra the other in Wanaka. Any person who is interested should speak with the Liaison Officer via any of the contacts listed to confirm details on dates and locations.
