The Buddy Programme enriches the lives of children 4 to 12 years old and right across Otago, with time, friendship, fun, and encouragement.
Run by Presbyterian Support Otago under its Family Works service, its Alexandra Buddy Co-ordinator Jan Bird matches children on the programme with carefully selected and trained adult volunteers, to share activities such as exploring, reading, talking, playing games or musical instruments, crafts, knitting, sewing, baking, drawing, painting, fishing, or visiting the museum – all low or no-cost activities that encourage positive interests, attitudes, values and behaviours.
Since its development in 1992, New Zealand's foremost Buddy Programme has held safe practice as a high priority. All policies, procedures and practices, including those for selection, training, support, and supervision, reflect that commitment. We accept referrals from any source, including the child’s family.
Our vision is for children and young people to be enthusiastic about life, and be actively and positively involved with the world.
