Clyde is located 10 minutes west of Alexandra at the southern end of the Cromwell Gorge. It is well known for its heritage aspects including gold mining relics, heritage buildings, restaurant dining and recreational opportunities. The 1970’s and 80’s saw significant change in the area with the construction of the Clyde Dam. This saw a huge influx of people to live in the area over the construction period. With the filling of the lake in the early 1990’s Lake Dunstan has become a tremendous recreation that much of Central Otago now enjoys.
The population of Clyde has been rising steadily for the last few years and is about 920. This has resulted in a number of new subdivisions being created and new houses being built in the area. It is estimated that 40% of the homes in Clyde are holiday homes and during the summer the population may increase to approximately 3,000.
Some of the key points that came out of the plan include:
- Development of a project to ensure historic buildings, sites and remnants are recognised, preserved and provide interpretation of the heritage aspects of the area.
- Promote improved access from the rail trail head to the town centre thus enabling visitors to travel safely into Clyde.
- Further development of the Clyde lookout/reservoir and Miners Lane to the Camp walking tracks.
- Create distinctive signage, in keeping with the new regional identity specifications which explains the heritage and stories of the area.
- Asses the need for an information centre in Clyde.
- Assess the need and advocate for public or community transport from Clyde to Alexandra.
- Encourage better signage of amenities at Lake Dunstan.
- A summary be developed of what the heritage precinct means and the implications for development in this area.
- Lobby the appropriate agency to widen the slip lane at the Sunderland Street/SH 8 corner.

Community Survey
Council conducted a survey of ratepayers and residents in November 2015 to gauge their opinions on the 'look and feel' of their community. There were two reasons for running the survey:
1. Nearly all of the action points within Clyde's Community Plan have now been addressed, and the working group for this plan wanted to gather information about the community's vision and values for their village, in preparation for the development of a new plan for Clyde;
2. Council's District Plan is being reviewed and staff wanted to understand what the community felt about growth in and beyond the village.
